My dad just floored us by announcing he was putting in notice for his retirement this weekend.

This may not surprise those who only go by age, since he was alive (albeit a young boy) during WWII. But those who do know him were shocked. I honestly don't know how he'll handle having that much free time.

(- I think that's why I feel so old around most people. I REMEMBER stuff about vietnam. My father was a boy during WWII and remembers the Korean War. My granfather's brother was in the first World War. That makes one feel old when dealing with a crowd that learned about the Gulf War in history class. -)

my uncles were around for wwii, but i can't remember if my parents were. i do not, however, remember vietnam. i do remember when John Lennon was shot. my mum cried.

i'm sure your dad will thoroughly enjoy retirement - mine does. i don't think he's ever done so much stuff! it's enabled him to travel, sign on as crew on a few yachts, do a *lot* of the work on my parents new house, go and play his concertina and sing a lot, and generally enjoy himself. my mum is desperate to retire, too.

My mum bought him a dulcimer for retirement gift. This should prove to be interesting.

Hey now....I was in my early twenties during the Gulf War.
I can't say I remember it too well because I was young and didn't want to deal with it at the time. But my best friend (in 92) when I was 24 was a boy who served there....and was messed up from it. He would never talk about what happened...he only showed me photos of his buddies. He became very ill....kept going to VA hospitals and they would say they could find nothing wrong. He's since been told it's GWS..even though some try to say it doesn't exist...I believe it does. I saw him get sicker year by year after he came back.

There's really only two types of people who came back from the gulf. The ones who boast and brag about how they were heroes etc etc etc ... and ... the ones who only begrudgingly talk about it when pressed. ANd even then hate giving details.

I think the most I've ever said about the desert is about betting on camel spider fights and how to make alcohol with the MRE kool-aid, fruit and black water jugs.
