This weekend, a lady was robbed at gunpoint around the corner from where I live. She was making the night deposit for the video store across the street from my house.(*)

The robber must have been casing the area and knew there would be a deposit made. As the cops found indents in the snow where he was crouched waiting.

My first thoughts upon hearing this weren't "I'd better secure my house more."(**) No, my first thoughts were to go talk to the general manager and either suggest he get an in-store safe for the nightly take OR to offer my services as an escort for the girls making the deposits.

* (- ie I go out my front door, turn left and can see the store. -)
** (- Fairly secure already. Which probably goes without saying. -)

I don't get why stores have employees make night deposits like that. My boss handles all the money and transactions, because why on earth should be take that responsiblity?

They do it because they trust the employeees even less than the thugs on the street. And it allows them to extend the chain of responsibility further from them, while still retaining the authority.
