... overall a completely suckass night. Probably LOST close to a grand at the door due to poor turnout (- more people came with free tickets or on guestlists than actually paying customers -) and the barbank just blew due to the few who showed up basically nursing their beers for as long as they could.

Thankfully no one tried to pull the, "I come here all the time. WHy should I pay that much to get in." I probably would have given them directions to the fourth ring of Hell.

I think what amazes me most is that the band's spokesman was even more of a weasel than Dave. I honestly didn't think it was possible to be THAT weasely without having musk glands. Guy was trying to get about 500 dollars worth of booze free for the band. I made a comment along the lines of "Give it to them and then just don't pay them cash. It's not like they actually drew a crowd."

This whole "guarantee" pay bullshit drives me up the wall. These 3rd rate bands that Dave signs will demand a guarantee AND a split of the door if they draw more than a certain number of people. In my opinion you get one or the other. You either get a percentage of the door or you take your guarantee.

Probably one of the things that has annoyed me the most about some of these bands that Dave books. They aren't right for this venue. They belong in a place like the Tralf or the Tap Room. He friggin books and promotes the bands he wants to see - not the ones that will draw a crowd that would actually COME to the Continental.

"Dude, I've been trying to get this band here for four years."

"Umm Dave, you haven't been the promoter here that long. Remember? the last club you ran BURNED TO THE FUCKING GROUND."

*sigh*

Maybe we'll be lucky and the Nothingface show tuesday night will help ease the bleeding bank deposit.

flatrate or half of the doorcover is more than resonable.

I don't know the biz at all, so please don't take this the wrong way, but why don't you just fire him and get a new promoter?

won't happen...

Dave's lips are surgically attached to the owner of the club's ass... and, for some reason, he's kept on, even though (at least a year ago) he was helping the bar lose more patronage and cash than he was bringing in...

and, speaking from experience, when one tries to say "look, I can help out... I CAN change things... THIS is what you have to do differently," they stare at you and say "you're nutz... you don't know what you're talking about."

the point of this whole rant is: Ownership just doesn't care... it's something for him to fuck around with. Nothing will change for "the better."

Speaking of lips being grafted onto Frank's ass. I did tell you that HELMET is now considering himself a promoter and barback duties are beneath him since he is the one "running" thursday nights now.

As Thor put it ... because Dave has his lips stuck to the owner's ass at the molecular level.

We are talking about a man who passed up having the CULT play here for nothing more than the door and a case of water when they had a night off from touring with Aerosmith.

I think, at least partially, the reason we don't often go to the club is because of the bands. In the past they booked shitty bands, often of the local "crapmetal" genre. However, they were at least shitty in an amusing human trainwreck sort of way. Nowdays most of the bands just suck, and even the good ones are saying they don't want to return (pig, misfits, et al) because of the management/band booking at the cont.
Between that and the other changes made by the new management I've been told by a ton of people that they just don't feel welcome or comfortable anymore at a club we've all been going to for years.
I'm sure the smoking ban won't help matters.

The entire thing is a very unfortunate state of affairs.

I no longer joke about Frank hiring Dave as the promoter because of what happened to Runwayz. It's not safe to joke about something that may be true.
