The amazing crow I've spoken of a few times here and elsewhere has left the building.

I don't know what the lifespan of crows in the wild tend to be. But this bird first came into our lives while I was still in junior high. So we're talking over two decades people.

Goodbye Dracula. You will be missed.

Well I hope we gave him a good life. We found him when I was still in junior high after the family had gone down to the old farm(1) to check the damages after a really tremendous summer storm. He was the only baby left alive after the storm killed the mother.

(1) By old, I mean no electricity, phone or plumbing.

My brother ( who was 10 at the time ) named him. Technically, Drac was his bird until he moved out and my dad took over caring for him.

I wanted to hear me call me a dumbell one more time. The time I saw him he was stil;l a spry bird for being over 20.

According to this site crows that make it to adulthood generally live 10-20 years, with very few reaching 30 years.

Thank you. Heh, the lifespan was the only thing I didn't know already upon reading that chat. :-)

Drac was semi-famous in the area. He was in the local paper a few times during the 80s.

In the summer, he would follow my dad's truck to work and hang around the store all day. When it was time to lock up, one of us would yell up to him and say, "Time to go home Drac." and he'd start the trip home. He'd usually beat us there, to boot.

(hugs you tight) He sounds like a very special friend, Jak. And like he had a very good and full life. Missing him is to be expected when a friend you've known all of your adult life is suddenly gone.

So sorry to hear of this. These moments are one of the downsides of inviting an animal companion into your life; but it sounds to me like he left you with a rich store of good memories also.
