Dear (formerly) prospective employer:

Deal with your HR people posthaste.

Seriously, I graduated in the 80s! Why the hell would you REQUIRE me to show you a copy of my high school diploma in order to be hired? Especially when you've seen my military status(1) AND my college transcripts.

My high school diploma wasn't something I kept ahold of after I'd been out of high school for more than ten years.

(1) ... I don't know if they've changed it since I got out. When I went in; you had to either be a high school graduate, have a GED or be enrolled in a GED equivilency program through basic training.

I couldn't find my high school diploma if you dared me to. My mom maybe has it in a box somewhere? I don't even think I know where my college one is, either. I graduated high school in 1993. And college in 1999. Who the hell keeps stuff like that?

Anyway, they realy are dumb if you have your military status and college transcripts there... because how did you do either of those if you managed to skip high school? And let's say you did -- if you managed the military and college, I'd think high school wouldn't really be a concern.

I have mine. A federal agency required me to bring it to an interview. They also wanted to see my marriage certificate, my divorce decree, my birth certificate, and an original social security card (unlaminated).

Mind you. This was the third and least secure federal agency I worked with last year. I cannot even fathom what they do with H-1B Visa people but they sure have a lot of those under contract. Do they really check in India and Pakistan for these people's equivalent docs? Or do they only hold citizens to this high standard because they know they couldn't get that kind of compliance out of foreigners they only pay $25/hour to. (As compared to the $75/hour going rate for citizens.)

Arg. I'm more and more frustrated with the stupidity of recruiters and HR groups.

Can't we just fire them all?

Some non-lj-enabled friends and I were discussing military stuff last week (one is ex-Navy) and according to him you no longer have to be a high school graduate for at least some branches (I don't remember the details, whether he said all or just named some). This may kind of contradict [livejournal.com profile] noralise though.

A HIGH SCHOOL diploma??? Someone asked you for this? wtf???

After I graduated from University with my near 4.0 gpa (thankyouverymuch) I was all psyched and when I applied places I had my transcripts at the ready (unofficial, of course). At every interview I would have them on hand and always offer them... and you know what? No One Gave A Flying F*ck What my GPA was. I could have told them I had a Ph.D. in Molecular Science and most wouldn't have blinked. Who the hell is going to want physical verification that someone graduated from high school near twenty years ago????!

Stupid company.
