What a fucktastic night!

Went on a late night run down to Ludington (about 30 miles away). If I had gone 15 minutes earlier or 15 minutes later I would have completely missed a motorcycle accident.

The few people who know about this area know what a deathtrap the intersection at Fountain can be. Especially this time of year when there's a summer fog late at night and the deer are abundant.

So i come over the hill, going a tad bit slower than I normally would during the day ( about 50 ... well below the speed limit ) ... and it takes all my trained driving reflexs to not run over the people and vehicle in the center of the intersection!

It seems that mere minutes before, a woman riding a motorcycle and a young man in a car were involved in a collision. I don't know who was at fault. That wasn't my concern. My concern was that I almost ran over the motorcycle, the rider AND the woman trying to give assistance.

The amount of dust kicked up as my car screeched to a stop a few yards from the accident thankfully blew away from the scene. I was belting out questions almost as soon as I got out.

"Has 911 been called?" - yes
"Do we have an ETA?" - no
"Is anyone here certified for medical asssitance?" - the highest ranked was a CPR course ( my MFR has been lapsed for years )

The girl was breathing, awake and alert. But she was complaining about her back REALLY hurting. So honestly the only thing to be done was making sure she didn't try to move until the ambulance got there. And that was being taken care of already.

The woman who was trying to keep the girl awake and as calm as possible was doing a STELLAR JOB. She really deserves some praise. So many people would've just panicked and taken off. But she kept as cool as a cucumber. Even after my almost running over the lot of them.

By this time, a few more cars had started coming on the scene. The few of us who stopped to render assistance started to try to direct the traffic as best we could as it was around midnight in the middle of nowhere.

The mothers of both people involved showed up before the authorities. Gods that could have been a nightmare.

What seemed like forever, but was really only a few minutes, the first of the rescue teams showed up.

Once the scene was fully under control, I asked the officer in charge if I could leave. I hadn't witnessed the accident so I couldn't give a statement. He thanked me for the assistance and said I could be on my way.

About two miles down the road ... the adrenaline started wearing off and I THEN had a panic attack. I'm surprised that I was even halfway coherent while I jabbered on the phone with [livejournal.com profile] ladycelest and [livejournal.com profile] ain9el.
