My take on the beating.

Most of the netgoth fringe on my flist has heard of this incident happening friday night in NOLA. So I've no need to press the case for anyone knowing the whereabouts of this worm to report anything they can to the proper authorities.
What happened to her is terrible. There's no doubt about that.
However, those who are freaking out and screaming about how the bastard ruined her modelling career are doing NOTHING but a disservice to the girl right now. She does not need to hear such things during the course of her surgeries and recuperation.
Her career is not ruined. It's DEFINATELY put on hold while she recovers. But it is not ruined. Saying such over and over will kill her confidence in trying to get back to the beautiful girl she was before the coward curbstomped her.
Heather, if you are reading these words. Take them to heart. The body is as resilient as you let it be. You'll heal. Iman did it. You can as well.
...
One thing that still sticks in my mind though.
How far away was the other guy, Paul, when this went on?
...
But again, anyone knowing the whereabouts of William Hamlet Hunt should contact the authorities and help bring him to justice. I'm not calling for a lynching as so many seem to be doing. Because, frankly, most of those calling for one wouldn't be able to actually go through with it if the situation arose. And that may allow the scum to escape. Those of us who COULD go through with it would be depriving some prisoners the satisfaction of making this boy their bitch.

You best be thankful I wasn't eating or drinking anything. Or else I'd have certainly choked and that wouldn't be nice. :P

On a scene level, I hope that the asshole guy is banned from all future convergences. We don't need him there.

she says it was only a couple of kicks - you know how fast those can happen. people freeze for a second, and i suspect that's all the time it took.

That's what a few people have been telling me. That it was probably "Deer in the Headlights" syndrome. As you said, he probably froze for a second.
Notice I wasn't "dissing" Paul. I was simply curious how far away he was when it went down. If he was even just ten feet away, he'd not have been there in time to stop the first kick.
I guess it's all the years in the professions I've done primarily which make me less likely to "freeze up". And I sometimes forget it's natural for people to not have a muscle memory - no thought required - instinct on how to handle such situations.

And that's one of the reasons why I normally walk one pace and to the 'off-hand' side of people when I think a situation may happen. Unless, of course, there's more than one of us security-type goons in the group. Then I'm either walking point and making path or playing 'caboose'.
It takes a lot less time to react to something in front of you then behind you.
but yeah, that's why I wasn't thinking less of Paul until I knew exactly how far away he was when this went down.
There have been far too many "If I was there ... yada yada yada ..." running around about this incident. Most from people who've never been in a fight or flight situation.

Although if he was really yelling insults and being harrassing, I would have been expecting something, and that makes a huge difference.
