Because of course no one READS!

Damn, shit like that pisses me off. Decorating Cents on HGTV just did their "trash to treasure" segment which focused on what to do with those 'worthless' hardcover books you've got hanging around.

GAHHH

oh dear. I'm . . . well I'm not especially surprised, but it is kind of sad.

Why would you spend all of that money on hardcovers and then be like, oo look, what a nice doorstop?

What horrifying suggestions did they make, out of curiosity?

rip the jackets off to frame as prints for the wall, fabric the books and use them as platforms for lamps and vases etc etc etc

urrgh. *twitch*

although . . . if you have a stack of hardbacks of, like, political tomes or trashy romance novels, wrapping them up and using them as lampbases, or whatever, is not *such* a crime. It has a kind of kitsch appeal, even to me. (Like a stack of Danielle Steele, say, anchoring a reading lamp.)

But the idea of doing this sort of thing to actually decent books . . . I. Just. Ugh. *shudder*

[gasp!]

though i agree that if you really don't intend to read a book, it should be in the possession of someone that actually will, i still would rather have hardcovers that paperbacks, or would rather have them than none at all.

how dare thy call them worthless.

grrr...

They really didn't call them worthless - but they definately implied it.

But what can we expect when we live in a world that can produce shoppes that sell old hardcover books BY THE POUND. That way the functionally illiterate yuppies and glitterati can SEEM intelligent.

That's damn criminal. It's the imposition of one art over another.

Coincidentally, if anyone does have any "worthless" hardcover books they want to part with, why not try www.bookcrossing.com ? Set a book free in the wild or capture one and set it free again.

I have a whole stack of books that wont fit in my shelves and I have no desire for them anymore, I wont throw them out and instead keep them to give away.
How the hell do you use a hardcover as a decorative table lamp anyways ? WTF.

i've often been annoyed at decorating shows for that kind of thing. they get rid of all the "clutter" of books, and have people throw out a bunch of them. i still have most the books i've ever had. i can't get rid of books. they're -books-.

When/If I ever have enough money to buy my own house and when/if lose enough common sense to hire an interior decorator ....

The moment the halfwit mentions getting rid of the "clutter" of my multiple bookcases and boxes of books, she'd be shit-canned.

"You'll have so much more room for kitschy knick knacks that show your true personality if you just clear out some of this clutter ... "

"Get out. Now."

What really blew my mind is how they mentioned going to estate sales to find these books because you can find old ones for dirt cheap.

Gahhh ... I could just imagine my uncle spinning in his grave if he knew any of his library was going to end up defiled like that.

It just remindz me how much I don't like most "home design" shows.

Some of us go to estate sales to find books for our collections.

When we own a house there is talk of putting in built in bookshelves and such as combined we have about 20-ish boxes of books being stored atm...

Well, you know, for arguments sake, while most hardcover books may not be worthless, there's a fair number that *are*. 'Reader's Digest' compendiums are fairly popular at yard sales, along with several decade old encyclopedias. And *none* of the used bookstores in my area will buy used hardcover SF, even if its this year's book. That includes the specialty shop.
