I and some others did some research on the spyware issue. It was nothing. We scoured our computers, ran all anti spy/malware programs we had to double check, and then each surfed WFI's site for 30 minutes. After we found only 3rd party ad cookies. No spyware/malware at all. I'm guessing this rumor was simply hysteria.
