Just got home from watching THE SPIRIT.
It's decidedly NOT Will Eisner's SPIRIT. It's definately a Frank Miller work. But I don't think Mr. Eisner would mind the liberties Miller took with the mythos.
There were character fusions aplenty. P'Gell and Sand Saref became the same person. Dr. Cobra and the Octopus melded into something ... else ... which could have ONLY been played by Jackson.
There were also some deletions. The character of Ebony White was COMPLETELY absent. But, honestly, I expected that. The PCdiots and professional victims would have been all a tizzy if they had included him.
There are plenty of (un)intentional in-jokes and Tarrantino moments. The fighting was completely comic bookish and even the henchmen were homages to the 60's Batman TV show. All in all, it was a lovely, over-the-top, stereotypically MILLER work.
I don't think it will be as successful as SIN CITY was due to a lot of the unwashed masses just thinking it's a SIN CITY spin-off. (- Which is how it was filmed. -) But it was still fun.
