"Would you be able to come in early tonight?"
During the summer, that usually means a good thing.
During this season of "The Sword of Damacles", it has caused a lump in my throat the size of a pocketgoth.
Expect the worst. Hope for the best.
I just have to keep thinking ... "If they were going to axe me; they'd have done it yesterday (first day of the new payperiod)."
