Book search
There are two "bubblegum" fiction books that I am currently seeking but am having a hard time finding. Mostly because I don't remember the exact names. Any help from my other libravore would be appreciated.
One is the typical "small town invasion by things unknown". The people of a small southwestern desert town are turning into a type of hive mind mobile cactus.
I remember one passage over all others. The protagonist sees one of the townspeople walk up to a cactus and puncture her arms on it ... and seems to draw off moisture from the plant that way.
...
The other is an anthology I read back in 98/99. The common theme was 50s movies touched by "weirdness".
One of the stories involved a mantis-like alien crash landing on earth and being discovered by a two-bit gang of greasers. They end up making him part of the gang.
Another involved an Atlanta underground BELOW the underground. Where members of the sons of the south took refuge (along with their slaves) during the end of the war and started to become 'mole-men'. (- That's one of the hokey lil things I liked about the story. It takes longer than 2-3 generations to bring about adaptations like that. -)
But the story I remember most involves a melding of the classic 50s "boy from the wrong side of the tracks falls for an uptown girl" but throws a bit of Lovecraft into the mix as Shub-Niggoroth becomes interested in the girl as well.
