I was a cronic nosebleeder as a kid, up through highschool. My mom took me to the ER one day after I had a nosebleed that was going on 12 hours and wouldn't stop. The doc who saw me was the first to tell me how to stop a nosebleed in under 5 minutes: put some vaseline or KY on a cotton ball and pack it in you nose. If both sides are bleeding, obviously use two. Then hold your index finger flat against your upper lip and apply pressure.
Evidentally the artery that supplies blood to nose runs across the upper lip. So compress that with the packing in place and hold about 5 minutes. Go 10 if you want to be sure. Then slowly remove the cotton and *gently* blow out the clots (otherwise you'll eventually swallow them).
HTH, and drink a lot of water if you've lost that much fluid!
