Why I hate american football.
I know a lot of you love the game. I won't begrudge you that if you will not hold a grudge for my utter contempt for the "sport".
There are many reasons why I can't stand football. But to be honest almost all of them stem from my hometown and the school system therein(1).
Football is held in higher regard than religion in my hometown. I say this because businesses close during away games (so people can attend them) yet will be open for thanksgiving, christmas and easter.
In my days at FHS, Football players were held in such veneration that drooling morons who had trouble with basic math skills somehow managed to graduate with high honours. There were smart athletes who actually deserved that prestige. The class valedictorian being one of them. But the majority were those who'd have trouble passing a GED class.
I gave up playing in the school band because, after the second year, there was no choice. If you wanted to stay in band you HAD to be part of the marching band. EVERYTHING in that school revolved around football.
ALL teachers in my school were/are coaches. If you would not coach something; they would find a way to get rid of you. The best history teacher I've ever encountered was asked to resign after little more than a year due to this little "unofficial" rule.
But what really caused me to despise the sport was one man. In class, he would overtly grope and paw at the cheerleaders without fear of reprisal or punishment. Most of the girls just put up with it. Some of the more vapid cheerwhores actuallyy thought it was a priviledge. There's no "proof" of this, but he knocked up one of them.
None of this caused him any career or legal harm because he brought the school to state finals year after year.
I was thrilled when I found out he'd quit and gone on to greener pastures. Sadly, it seems that pasture didn't give him his freedom of extracurricular activities. SO he's back teaching and coaching at FHS.
He has no idea how lucky he is than none of my nieces go to the school.
SO yeah ... I have reasons to hate the sport. Don't be surprised when I really have no interest in talking about it.
(1) I know a one school city is unheard of to most of you. Hell, most of you are from schools that had bigger graduating classes than the student population of my whole high school.
