My dad hated his time in the army, but he paid attention. Mainly he was a realist about what bullets and arrows and such do to people in the way that no 15 year old can be. He was also an avid fantasy and sci-fi reader.
My first exposure to fantasy was him reading me the Hobbit and LoTR when I was 6 and 7.
